My Story
My name is Mary Kathryn Goff and I would like to share my story with those who might have encountered the same situations and issues that I have in their journey through life. I believe my story is a little different than most and although there has been a lot of adversity, I want to share with you how I have learned to look at my problems with a positive attitude. I am surprised at what brought me to that point and I think you may be also.
We are each given a gift that is ultimately the most precious of all our possessions. That gift is know to man as TIME. Too often we abuse, misuse, and even confuse the importance of that magnificent gift. Also, we are likely to take it for granted. After all, everyone we know has it! It is even allotted to plants and animals. The amount of time allowed for each individual varies, but it is not the hours, days, months, or years that really make the difference. I think we would all agree that it boils down to one thing. WHAT DO WE DO WITH IT? Do we treasure each moment, or do we just waste it away without a thought of running out?
I was fortunate enough to be raised by a very intelligent and productive man. He was a coal miner and farmer. That man could do anything he decided to do and he would work at it until he did it well. He was only privileged to finish the eighth grade in school, but he educated himself by reading and studying everything he could get his hands on and on every subject that captured his interest. He had a library that was certainly not typical of the blue collar working man. He didn't make a name for himself with the world and society, but he certainly made a good life for his family, providing many things that others in our culture couldn't have.
He taught us well. I learned poetry at an early age. Every night he would read poetry written by the masters instead of bedtime stories. One poem that he taught me was written by Rudyard Kipling, entitled, "IF". Although I have since memorized the entire poem, it was the last verse after which I patterned my life. I quote: "If you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run - then your is the earth and everthing that's in it, and which is more, you'll be a man, my son."
He emphasized that over and over to me. He would say, "Waste your money, you may earn it again. Waste your food, you may find more. Waste is bad in any sense, but to waste time is horrific. You can't get one second of it back."
I married at age eigthteen (right out of high school as many of us do) and had three children. They have grown into people that I believe are an asset to society. I have also raised two grandchildren. One of those children is still with me. Her name is Jenny. She is autistic.
My husband passed on June 15, 2007. We were doing well financially to that point, but after his passing I realized that I had no choice but to find a way to increase our basic living income. Jenny and I had to survive and I wanted the best for her.
Now we get to the good part. How could I possible earn money? I certainly couldn't leave the house. There was no one to care for Jenny. Being that she is mentally handicapped, it very difficult to find people who are willing to sit with people with these problems. More importantly, no one else would know and understand her way of speaking, her rituals, and all the things that go with autism.
One day she and I went to the mailbox and found a bright yellow card that became the answer I had been waiting for. I was reluctant at first to respond to the message on the card, but finally I thought it wouldn't hurt to find out what it was all about. The card said I could start making money immediately with a business of my own. It could be a job I could do anywhere, with or without a computer. I have a computer, but I knew very little about anything except how to use email and iTunes for my iPod. Reading more of the message on the card I learned that (now get this!) you don't even NEED a computer. Needless to say, I made that call. Time was the issue here, and I must not waste it. I needed to earn money now!
As a result of that phone call, I have enjoyed the kindest, most considerate people I have ever met. The checks I have received have compensated for our financial losses and I know I am making the most of the valuable gift of TIME that has been set aside for me by God Himself. There was so much I needed to learn, but there have been people there for me - just a phone call away. I even have them on "speed dial", making it quicker when I have a question or need personal coaching.
Need I say, I LOVE MY NEW JOB??? Maybe you are financially secure and comfortable, but need a challenge. Perhaps you are like me, homebound and desperate for added income. You can work a 9 - 5 job and do this, also. It only takes a couple of hours a day - at the most.
